Purpose
Founded in 1939, Leader Dogs for the Blind empowers people who are blind or visually impaired with lifelong skills for independent travel through quality Leader Dogs, highly effective client instruction and innovative services. Each year, over 200 students attend our 25 day residential training program to be paired with a guide dog. We also offer an additional component to our guide dog program where we teach people how to use audible, pedestrian GPS to navigate both familiar and new environments in conjunction with their guide dog.
Service
Provides mobility programs for people who are blind, visually impaired or DeafBlind. Programs include training in the use of a Leader Dog, O&M training (cane travel), a Teen Summer Camp for 16-17 years old and a Teen O&M program for 16-17 year olds. Eligibility
Legally blind, physically capable of the work., at least 16 years old.
Fees
All training and equipment is provided free of charge. Leader Dog also covers the cost to travel to Michigan
