Purpose | To serve as the historical agency for Maryland, and as the central depository for government records of permanent value dating from the colonial period to the present. |
Service | Holdings include colonial and state executive, legislative, and judicial records; county probate, land, and court reports; church records; business records; publications and reports of state, county, and municipal governments, and special collections of private papers, maps, photographs, and newspapers. The public is welcome to visit the archives. Professional archivists are on duty in the public search room to researchers. Patrons must register and provide legal proof of identity with photograph. Children are admitted as long as quiet is maintained. For safety of the materials, food and all liquids are prohibited for adults and children; pencil only must be used. Please view the Archives' extensive Internet site before visiting. RESEARCH REQUESTS: Researchers unable to visit the Archives may place orders by telephone, mail, fax, or email. Research and copy services are offered on a fee-for-service basis; please visit the Reference and Research section of the Internet site for pricing and specific information. SPECIAL SERVICES: Go to the second web address listed above to see our list of publications. The lobby and exhibit areas contain small exhibits of Maryland maps and photographs.
