PurposeTo bring diverse communities into conversation through the traditional arts, to discover our shared humanity. This purpose is expressed through workshops with master musicians, artists, film makers, writers, dancers, and thinkers, as well as concerts and roots music & arts oriented festivals. To serve as a model for seeking common ground within our larger community.
Service Common Ground on the Hill, a Regional Maryland Folklife Center for Carroll, Howard and Frederick Counties, offers Traditions Weeks (two annual week-long traditional arts summer camps and concerts in June - July) at McDaniel College; the Deer Creek Fiddlers' Convention in June; a one-day Roots Music and Arts Festival in July; Common Ground on the Town, a concert at the Carroll Arts Center which precedes and celebrates Traditions Weeks in July; monthly community concerts via a collaboration with Carroll Arts Center in Westminster (Common Ground Downtown) from October through April each year; and free jam sessions for Bluegrass, Old-Time and Celtic Music at the Carroll Arts Center on 1st Wednesdays monthly and at St. Paul's United Church of Chris on 3rd Wednesdays. Concerts are also offered at various times at The Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore. All summer workshops are optionally offered for credit at the graduate and undergraduate levels for an additional fee. Qualified Carroll County Public School teachers and other schools systems that are on direct billing with McDaniel College receive full tuition and credit hour reimbursement, where eligible.
