PurposeTo promote the prestige and general welfare of Carroll County by fostering the preservation and proper appreciation of the county's rural culture, and the spirit and values which this culture typifies.
ServiceThis 140-acre museum features life on the farm in the late 1800s. Guides in period costume give tours through the Farmhouse. In addition, there is an extensive collection of antique farm machinery and horse-drawn carriages housed in five exhibition buildings. Demonstrations of various 19th century skills are presented by volunteer museum artisans in the Living History Center which features a quilting room, a spinning and weaving room, a tinsmith's shop, an almshouse room, an open-hearth kitchen, a veterinary surgeon's office, country apparel shop, and broom shop. Other exhibit buildings include a blacksmith's shop, a one-room schoolhouse, and a general store. The Museum Gift Shop is in the administrative office featuring items made by museum artisans. The Mearing Barn features modes of transportation, sleighs, horse pulled buggies, mail cart and hearse. Next door is the 18th century Hoff Log Barn with a display of tools used to build the barn and crops grown on the farm. Events include Civil War Living History Reenactment, Veteran's Day Celebration, Food Truck Sunday Funday, Blacksmith Days, Old-Fashioned July 4th Celebration, Steam Show Days, The Maryland Wine Festival, Fall Harvest Days, and Holiday House Tour. A Living History Camp is offered in the summer for school children entering the third through fifth grades and Farm Camp; preregistration is required. School and group tours of the Farmhouse and exhibition buildings is by reservation only. Museum grounds can also be used as a unique setting for garden weddings, receptions, reunions, and company picnics. Rental facilities include three pavilions, the grounds, reception barn, George Grier and Landon C. Burns Memorial Meeting Rooms. Call for admission fees, rental fees, hours, or directions. Many volunteer opportunities are available in a variety of areas.
