PurposeTo promote the prestige and general welfare of Carroll County by fostering the preservation and proper appreciation of the county's rural culture, and the spirit and values which this culture typifies.
ServiceThis 140-acre museum features life on the farm in the late 1800s. Guides in period costume give tours through the Farmhouse. In addition, there is an extensive collection of antique farm machinery and horse-drawn carriages housed in five exhibition buildings. Demonstrations of various 19th century skills are presented by volunteer museum artisans in the Living History Center which features a quilting room, a spinning and weaving room, a tinsmith's shop, an almshouse room, an open-hearth kitchen, a veterinary surgeon's office, country apparel shop, and broom shop. Other exhibit buildings include a blacksmith's shop, a one-room schoolhouse, and a general store. The Museum Gift Shop is located in the lower level of the Mearing Barn, next door to the 18th century Hoff Log Barn. An Heirloom Garden is located near the fish pond. Events include Traditional Arts Week, Civil War Living History Reenactment, Blacksmith Days, Spring Muster and Antique Fire Equipment Show, Fiddler's Convention, Old-Fashioned July 4th Celebration, Summertime Fun Festival, Steam Show Days, The Maryland Wine Festival®, Fall Harvest Days, and Holiday Visit. A Living History Camp is offered in the summer for school children entering the third through fifth grades; preregistration is required. School and group tours by reservation only.
