PurposeTo offer an opportunity for dedicated and environmentally conscious volunteers to adopt a stretch of state road for which they will be responsible for picking up litter four times a year on a two year contract. Also available are one time cleaning agreements for groups that are not able to commit to four times a year, so they may obtain service hours and provide a much needed service to their community when they have the time to do so.
ServiceSHA will provide a sign acknowledging adopting volunteers or groups by name, reflective vests, trash bags, and two SWAT signs to notify motorists that a group is ahead. Groups should call to see which stretch of a state road is available for adoption. Participating parties then sign a two-year agreement stating that they will pick up the litter along their stretch of highway at least four times a year. An agreement will also be included verifying that all safety conditions are understood and will be followed. The minimum age for participation is 12 years of age. Participants under the age of 18 years must be supervised by an adult (18 years or older). Participants are welcome to keep and redeem any recyclables along their stretch of state road. For one time cleaning agreements, reflective vests will be loaned to the group and trash bags will be provided. The vests and leftover trash bags must be returned to SHA for use by other groups.
