PurposeTo have equal responsibility with the Senate for declaring war, maintaining the armed forces, assessing taxes, borrowing money, minting currency, regulating commerce, and making all laws necessary for the operation of the government.
ServiceThe House of Representatives has 435 members. The number representing each state is determined by population, with each state having at least one representative. Members are elected by the people for two-year terms, all terms running for the same period. Elections are in November; the new session of Congress officially convenes the following January.
