PurposeTo operate, preserve, and maintain the historic Union Mills Homestead complex, built in 1797.
ServiceThe Union Mills Homestead is open seasonally for guided tours, providing visitors a glimpse into the lives of the six generations of one family that lived here over 160 years. The site is open for tours in May and September on weekends only from noon to 4 pm. From June through August, it is open 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesday through Friday, and weekends noon to 4 pm. Closed Mondays. The Union Mills Homestead complex is a museum of American culture providing visitors a view into two centuries of Maryland history. Interpretive tours through the historic Shriver Homestead reflect the evolution of rural living over a period from the Washington administration through the mid-twentieth century. The restored, working Grist Mill demonstrates how grist mills were among the earliest of American industries, using waterpower and automated milling technologies to turn grains into flour. The Homestead is known for its variety of annual events: the Flower & Plant Market the first weekend in May, Civil War Encampment on the 3rd weekend of July; the Annual Corn Roast Festival the first Saturday in August; and the Maryland Microbrewery Festival the last Saturday in September. The Union Mills Homestead is located on Route 97, seven miles north of Westminster and about 15 miles south of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
