Purpose | To promote a more peaceful and cohesive community by providing a free, expedient, and informal alternative to settling disputes. |
Service | This informal and consensual process involves using a trained neutral person, a mediator, to help people in a dispute communicate with one another, understand each other, explore possible solutions, and, if possible, reach agreements that meet the participants' needs and resolve their differences. During this collaborative process, individuals work with the mediator to seek lasting solutions. The mediator does not decide who is right or wrong; he or she merely assists the parties in coming to an acceptable solution. Mediation empowers people to resolve their own problems in a constructive way that may enable them to avoid conflict in the future. Situations that are appropriate for mediation through this program are family, friend, or neighborhood disputes including misdemeanor criminal acts (such as trespassing, telephone misuse, and harassment), and certain simple assaults. |
