PurposeTo provide a program of therapeutic horseback riding to children and adults with physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities.
ServiceThe program also provides a training center for Special Olympics Carroll County equestrian athletes. Therapeutic riding uses horses as tools to facilitate the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social skills of individuals with disabilities. The movement of the horse's gait develops and strengthens the normal gait of the physically challenged rider. Improved balance and sensory integration are other physical benefits. In addition, learning a new skill and mastering control of such sizable animals increases self-esteem. The therapeutic riding experience is rich in language input and opportunities to develop cognitive skills as well. This program provides different opportunities for various riders based on their needs and interests. The program adheres to the standards of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association to determine rider eligibility. A physician's referral is required of all prospective participants to screen for medical contraindications to riding. This program is entirely staffed by volunteers who fill many roles, such as instructors, side-walkers, horse handlers, facility maintenance and clerical support. New volunteers are always needed; training is provided. Contact Peggie at the number or email address above for registration information. Program operates September through October, and March to June.
